Silicon[Si]
Silicon is a semi-metal with a density of of 2.34 g/cc and 1423 degC melting point. It can be produced a few ways but the principle route is the reduction of silica (SiO2) with the use of carbon.
It as an important element added in steel production for de-oxidation, aiding soundness and imparting low magnetic hysteresis. Impregnation of steel surfaces with Si (ihrigising) provides hardness and corrosion resistance. Silicon adds strength to aluminium alloys. Having a strong semi-conductor character, high purity forms of silicon are widely used in electronic components, solar cells and glasses.
It is available to the following typical analysis:
- Si: - 98.5% min
- Al: - 0.50% max
- Fe: - 0.50% max
- Ca: - 0.30% max
Material size range: 10 - 100 mm
Traded in metric tonnes (mts).
