Tungsten [W]
A greyish metal having a density of 19.3 g/cc and melting point of 3410 degC. These two properties alone make it one of the most important metals in use across a very wide range of service applications. It imparts toughness to special steels, has excellent high temperature strength making it useful in super-alloys, riveting heads, contact breakers and electrical filaments. Its high density provides weight in counter-balancing, ballast, projectiles and ionising radiation shielding. Its exceptionally high melting point is applied to welding, plasma and EDM electrodes. Tungsten also has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion which is made use of in semi-conductor heat sinks.
Compounds of tungsten possess many other unique properties that are used in cutting tools e.g. tungsten carbide (WC), catalysis, pigments and lubricants.
A & M Minerals offers tungsten powders and alloys thereof to various specifications. For further information refer to the following link:
Wolframite [(Fe,Mn)WO4]
One of the principle minerals of tungsten of which the ore concentrate is generally to the following composition:
- WO3 - >65%
- As - 0.2 - 1.0%
- Ca - <1.0%
- P - <1.0%
- S - <0.7%
- SiO2 - <7.0%
- Sn - 0.2 - 1.0%
- Mo - <0.4%
- Cu - 0.08 - 0.4%
Scheelite [CaWO4]
Another of the principle tungsten minerals that is also traded in ore concentrate form and container loads. Prices are quoted in USD/mtu WO3 content, with variations in detailed specifications and logistics controlling the final price and terms of supply.
Ammonium Paratungstate [(NH4)10 (W12O41) .5H2O]
Also commonly termed APT, it is the "mother salt" or fundamental intermediate for downstream manufacturing of most tungsten materials and is used in tungsten-bearing catalysts. APT is quoted on the LME where its price is used as the precursor for the tungsten market.
Ammonium paratungstate is a white crystalline powder having a minimum WO3 content of 88.5%, it is traded in container loads and priced in USD/mtu WO3. Its composition is typically:
- WO3 - =88.5%
- Mo - <0.002%
- Others - <0.001%
Ammonium Metatungstate [(NH4)6 (H2W12O40) .xH2O]
Also commonly termed AMT. It is has higher water-solubility than APT which suits its predominant application in tungsten-bearing catalysts. It is also a white crystalline powder of up to 99.95% purity AMT.
Two grades are used in the industry having WO3 contents of minimum 83% and 90%.
AMT is generally priced in USD/mt of material based on its WO3 content.
Tungstun Trioxide[WO3] Tungstun Oxide [WO3-x]
Both oxides are primarily used for the production of tungsten powder. WO3 is a yellow powder and often referred to as YTO, whereas WO3-x is blue and known as BTO and TBO.
Purity is typically 99.95% and it is traded in drums and big bags (WO3).
Pricing is in USD/mtu.
Tungstic Acid [H2WO4] or [WO3.H2O]
This is a light yellow powder which is used to make fine tungsten powders and glazes. Tungsten-bearing catalysts are also made using tungstic acid.
WO3 content can be minimum 91% and it is traded in drums in USD/mt of material based on the WO3 concentration.
Sodium Tungstate[Na2WO4]
This is a white crystalline powder used in a variety applications such as tungsten intermediates, tungsten-bearing catalysts, mordents, water treatment and fire proofing fabric.
Sodium tungstate is minimum 68% WO3, available up to 98.5% purity and traded in USD/mt based on its WO3.
